Takeo Murata is a blacksmith from Kochi Japan who began his apprenticeship at 16 in 1965 and is famed for his craftsmanship and the balance of his knives.
For this line of knives Murata-san uses Aogami #1 and clads them with soft iron. Aogami #1 (blue carbon steel) is prized for its edge retention, easy sharpening, extreme sharpness. The knives have a rustic blacksmith finish known as a kurouchi finish. Instead of further polishing the knife after the forging process, the knife maker leaves the residue on the knife. This process actually requires a lot of skill to do properly because the maker has to forge the knife to the exact shape as the sharpener/grinder will only remove steel from the edge bevel.
This line of knives have all been fitted with a Magnolia handle with acrylic collar.
