In the late 1890″s Japan was undergoing a rapid change from a feudal state, to that of a capitalist one. The demand for Samurai swords was dwindling, and the smiths were struggling. These changing times gave rise to the “Higonokami” or “short knife”. These knives are now being forged by fifth generation blacksmith Mitsuo Nagao. They are a folding blade with a friction lock and feature a distinctive thumb lever to prevent accidental closing. They are nice and slim which makes them a perfect little pocket knife for multiple jobs.
