In the late 1890's, Japan was undergoing a rapid change from a feudal state to that of a capitalist one. The demand for Samurai swords was dwindling and the blacksmiths were struggling. These changing times gave rise to the “Higonokami” or “short knife”.

Higo No Kami is a type of folding pocket knife originating in Miki, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan in 1896.

These Higo are made by Tomita-San who has passed away since making these knives. He hand forged  all of his knives in his small workshop outside of Miki-city.
